The Far Rockaway Area
Situated on the Rockaway Peninsula in the Queens borough is Far Rockaway, New York. It is on the far east part of the peninsula; beginning at the Nassau County line. Henry Hudson, an English sea explorer, was the first European to set eyes on the Rockaway; in the process of seeking a western route to Asia as an employee of the Dutch East India Company.
Prior to European settlement, the Rockaway area was lived on by the Canarsie Indians. The Rockaway was derived from Reckowacky (and several spelling variations) as a way of setting the Rockaway village apart from other Mohawk Nation villages that heavily populated in the area and were known as the “Keepers of the Eastern Door”. By the late 1930’s, most of the territory had been sold to the Dutch West India Company by the Mohawk Nation.
Far Rockaway grew into a larger village after separating from the Town of Hempstead, which was part of Queens County. After land disputes, the land was sold to Richard Cornell who lived and died on the land. The Cornell Cemetery represents the one and only designated New York City landmark in the Rockaways. Further development of the land after Cornell’s death including the construction of a hotel, residences, and a transportation system of horse drawn carriages and a ferry aided in building the Rockaways up as a larger village by 1888 and it was incorporated by 1898.
